What is Old Bedhampton?

Old Bedhampton is the historic core of Bedhampton, on the western side of Havant. Havant Borough Council's Old Bedhampton Conservation Area Appraisal, agreed at Full Council on 25 September 2019, says it lies west of Havant and Brockhampton, just north of the A27 and the coast and at the foot of Portsdown Hill. The conservation area takes in the historic village and the open space of Bidbury Mead to the east. It is one of 14 conservation areas listed on the council's conservation page.

How old is Bedhampton?

The appraisal says Bedhampton has a direct mention in the Domesday Book of 1086, which records a population of approximately 120, and that the Domesday Book also recorded a church and two mills. Wikipedia's Bedhampton article says early mentions go back to the ninth century. The appraisal notes that natural springs and streams, with water noted for its purity, were an important reason for the settlement being here, and that the streams shaped both the layout and the economy of the village.

What is Bidbury Mead?

The appraisal describes Bidbury Mead as a large tree-ringed recreation ground that provides a green setting to the Church of St Thomas, formerly recorded as Bedbury Mead, a grazing meadow. It says the mead contains historic springs, was the site of the annual fair, and that its south-east corner is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Wikipedia adds that it is home to Bedhampton Mariners Cricket Club and Bedhampton Bowling Club. It is open space beside the village, so it makes an easy starting point for a short walk.

What is St Thomas's Church?

The Church of St Thomas the Apostle stands on the northern side of Bidbury Lane. The appraisal says it is Grade II listed, dates from the 12th century, and is considered of architectural and historic interest for its 12th century and later medieval fabric, including a number of 14th century tracery windows, with a notable 12th century chancel arch inside. It describes the church as the centre of the old village. Visiting times can vary, so contact the parish before you plan to go inside. To check the listing entry itself, use the Historic England list.

What is the Keats connection at the Old Mill House?

The appraisal says it is reputed that the poet John Keats finished his poem The Eve of St Agnes in 1819 at The Old Mill House, and spent his last night in England there in 1820. It says the house was then still a working mill, and that the miller John Snooks and his wife Laetitia were the poet's hosts. The same document lists The Old Mill House as Grade II listed on 16 May 1962, a brick house to a former mill, beside a tidal stream with views over the Hermitage Stream at the rear.

The word reputed matters here, because the appraisal uses it. The house is a dwelling with its own grounds, so please admire it from the public lanes and respect the occupants' privacy.

What else is in the conservation area?

The appraisal lists a mill complex that includes the Corn Mill, Mill House and Watermill, all Grade II listed, with millponds, mill races, sluices and weirs that it says show the village's former prosperity from using the natural water supply. It also picks out a Victorian railway bridge on Mill Lane that links the village to the mills, and says the area straddles the Portsmouth to London railway. The Elms is described as a Grade II* listed house, and the Old Bedhampton National School, built in 1868 and now converted, is Grade II listed.

The council also warns of pressures on this character, including narrow lanes with limited pavements and traffic. If you walk or drive through, go carefully.
